The physical properties of silica

Silicon dioxide is also called silica (quartz sand) [2], chemical type SiO2. There are two kinds of crystalline silica and amorphous silica in nature. Crystalline silica due to different crystal structure, divided into quartz, scale quartz and square quartz three kinds. Pure quartz is colorless crystal, large and transparent prism-like quartz is called crystal. If contains the trace impurity the crystal to have the different color, has the amethyst, the Citrine, the Me Jing and so on. Ordinary sand is a small quartz crystal, there are yellow sand (more iron impurities) and white sand (less impurities, purer). Silicon dioxide crystals, the 4 valence electrons of a silicon atom form 4 covalent bonds with 2 oxygen atoms, located at the center of a tetrahedron, where 4 oxygen atoms are located at the 4 apex of the tetrahedron, the entire crystal is a giant molecule, and the SiO2 is the simplest form of expression that does not represent a single silica molecule, is the ratio of the number of atoms in silicon dioxide crystals to that of oxygen. SiO2 in the SI key can be very high, melting point, high boiling point (melting point 1723 ℃, boiling point 2,230 ℃). The diatomite in nature is amorphous silica, the remains of diatom of lower aquatic plants, white solid or powder, porous, light, soft solid, strong adsorption.
